Best Coffee Beans on the Gold Coast — A Local Roaster’s Guide

The Gold Coast has a serious coffee culture. Between the cafés lining Burleigh, the espresso bars in Broadbeach, and the hole-in-the-wall spots in Coolangatta — people here know good coffee when they taste it. But when it comes to buying beans for home, most people default to whatever’s on the supermarket shelf. The problem? Those beans were roasted months ago, shipped from interstate or overseas, and sitting in a warehouse long before they hit the shelf. There’s a better option — and it’s local.

Why Freshly Roasted, Local Coffee Beans Taste Better

Coffee is a fresh product. Most people don’t realise that roasted coffee beans start losing flavour within a few weeks. The difference between beans roasted yesterday and beans roasted two months ago is enormous — it’s like comparing a tomato from a backyard garden to one that’s been in cold storage. When you buy from a local Gold Coast roaster, you’re getting beans that were roasted days ago, not weeks. That means more aroma, more complexity in the cup, and a much better experience whether you’re pulling espresso shots or making a plunger at home.

What to Look For When Buying Coffee Beans

Not all beans are created equal. Here are the main things to consider:

Roast Date (Not Best Before)

Always check the roast date. If there isn’t one on the bag, that’s a red flag. Fresh beans should ideally be used within 2–6 weeks of roasting. Supermarket bags usually only show a “best before” date which tells you very little. We put the roast date at the top of the backs of all of our bags. If you come to either of our cafe’s you can always ask what batches we have available. Some customers like to get it a few days after roasting and keep at home for a week or two before drinking. That’s cool with us, just ask.

Blend vs Single Origin

Blends combine beans from multiple origins to create a consistent, balanced flavour. They’re designed to perform well across different brew methods — especially with milk. If you’re making flat whites or lattes at home, a good blend is usually the way to go. Single origins are beans from one specific farm or region. They tend to have more distinct, unique flavour characteristics — fruity, floral, or wine-like. Great for filter, pour over, or black coffee drinkers who want to explore different flavours.

Grind or Whole Bean?

If you’ve got a grinder at home, always buy whole bean. You’ll get more flavour and freshness. If you don’t, most local roasters (including us) will grind to your preferred method — whether that’s espresso, plunger, stovetop, or filter.

Our Gold Coast Coffee Blends

We roast all of our coffee right here in Ashmore and supply lots of Gold Coast cafés. Here’s a quick rundown of what we offer for home coffee lovers:

Coastal Blend

Our award-winning blend — this one took out the Golden Bean Australia award for best milk-based coffee. Bright floral characteristics with rich intensity that cuts through milk beautifully. Tasting notes of chocolate, red berry, and spice. If you’re a flat white or latte drinker, this is the one. Origins: Brazil Monte Alegre, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Colombian Supremo, Guatemala Antigua

Hinterland Blend

The crowd-pleaser. A versatile, approachable blend that works brilliantly as a milk coffee or as a sweet, chocolatey black. Medium acidity with clean clarity. Tasting notes: Sweet mocha, chocolate, zesty citrus

Costa D’Oro

For those who prefer a darker, more traditional roast. Full-bodied with bold intensity.

Jungle Bean

Our specialty single origin offering — for the adventurous coffee drinker who wants something different.

Decaf

Because sometimes you want a 3pm flat white without being awake at midnight. Our decaf uses the same quality beans and roasting approach as our caffeinated range.

Limited releases

We also have a 1kg pilot roaster so we are often doing special small runs of limited lots.

How to Get the Best Cup at Home

No matter which beans you choose, a few basics will dramatically improve your home coffee:
  1. Use fresh beans — buy in small quantities and use within a few weeks of the roast date
  2. Store properly — keep beans in an airtight container, away from heat and light. There’s some debate over whether to keep them in the fridge or freezer, we tend to recommend keeping in a cool space in the house, the main thing is make sure it’s air tight. Our retail bags are resealable which is important for keeping beans air tight.
  3. Use the right grind — espresso needs a fine grind, plunger needs coarse, stovetop sits in between. If you’re not sure, we grind to order for your brew method.
  4. Get your water right — always use filtered water. Coffee is 98% water, so it matters. Every cafe you get coffee from has a water filter system.
  5. Dial in your ratio — a good starting point is roughly 1:2 for espresso (e.g. 18g in, 36g out) or about 60g per litre for filter/plunger.
